Exhibition Profile
Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, has as its field of activity international and Danish contemporary art, with innovative and experimental contemporary art as its exhibition profile. It is the Art Center's vision to present exhibitions which place themselves centrally within this field. Furthermore, exhibitions by artists who have had a pioneering impact on today's art are presented.

Today, Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, is a non-profit institution under the City of Copenhagen. As an art centre, we do not have a permanent collection (apart from three permanent installations); instead, we aim to present contemporary art through changing exhibitions and related activities.
As the capital's art centre, Nikolaj endeavours to have an international perspective, to present the diversity of contemporary art and to offer the city's inhabitants as well as tourists the opportunity to get acquainted with new and experimental art. The Art Center thus serves as a public meeting ground between guests and contemporary art, with the guests' meeting with contemporary art at the centre of things.
Contemporary art is often interdisciplinary in its scope and calls for the audience to play an active part and to explore things for themselves. Social, political, historical, aesthetic and ethical relations often constitute obvious perspectives on the changing exhibitions. How to communicate them therefore becomes crucial. This applies in general terms as the guests step right into the Information Counter which becomes their first encounter with the Art Center; and it applies specifically to children and young people whose needs Nikolaj has a special employee to meet.
